Youth Economic Empowerment through Livestock Development (YEELD)

Location: Teso, Bukedi, and Ankole sub-regions, Uganda
Duration: April 2026 - September 2031

This project supports 300,000 young people to overcome poverty through livestock value chain production, financial literacy, and support in starting and scaling agribusinesses.

Our approach

The YEELD project supports young people to build viable livestock businesses, mainly in the dairy value chain, by strengthening their business skills, and access to finance and markets.

Young people join training sessions that strengthen the way they manage livestock and develop their enterprises. This includes best practices for livestock production, alongside approaches that reduce the risks posed by climate change. Young farmers also learn about value addition, creating opportunities to increase the value of animal-derived products (like yoghurt and ghee using milk) rather than relying only on primary production.

Participants access to better-performing breeds through community-led livestock breed improvement and multiplication hubs. These hubs make improved breeds more available through local markets. Artificial Insemination is introduced for pigs and cattle to support breed improvement at community level.

Young people also develop skills in producing animal feed and fodder, addressing gaps in access to quality feed. Training for Agrovets, agro-input providers and those involved in farm structures strengthens the local services available to young livestock farmers.

Participants come together through Youth Producer Groups (YPGs) and cooperatives, giving them a stronger collective voice within the livestock sector. These groups enable them to better coordinate activities and engage with service providers and buyers. Groups provide a structure for training and business development, while cooperatives can support aggregation and connections with wider markets.

Additionally, the project strengthens community-led livestock breed improvement through multiplication hubs, enabling young people to take part in improving the availability of better-performing breeds in local markets.

Community-managed milk collection centres also create opportunities for young people to organise around milk aggregation and value addition.

Community-based learning centres provide spaces for practical learning and knowledge exchange. Young people can share their experiences, learn from each other, build confidence in managing livestock enterprises and develop a better understanding of the wider value chain.

YEELD supports young people to see livestock as a route to building their own businesses and earning an income. Business Development Services give young entrepreneurs access to advice as they establish and grow their enterprises, while a catalytic and challenge fund provides opportunities for youth-led businesses to pursue innovation and investment.

Young people connect to markets and business opportunities through trade shows and Business Expos. Market information systems provide access to more timely information about livestock markets, helping young entrepreneurs make better-informed decisions about their businesses.

The project also supports value addition alongside production. Community-managed milk collection and learning centres provide opportunities for aggregation, processing and knowledge sharing, while quality assurance and product certification strengthen the competitiveness of businesses using shared value-addition facilities.

Access to finance is a significant barrier for many young people, particularly those who wish to start or grow a livestock enterprise. YEELD strengthens Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs), creating stronger foundations for young people to save and access financial services.

The project connects livestock enterprises with VSLAs, SACCOs and financial institutions, encouraging the development of financial products that are better suited to young entrepreneurs. This is particularly important for people who do not have the collateral traditionally required to access credit.

Vulnerable young people also receive essential start-up inputs and mentorship to establish viable enterprises. By linking these young entrepreneurs into wider financial and business networks, the project makes participation in livestock value chains more accessible.

Not all young people have the same access to opportunities in the livestock sector. Young women, people with disabilities and refugees can face additional barriers when seeking land, livestock, finance or employment. The project addresses these barriers through tailored support for vulnerable young people. Essential start-up inputs and mentorship give those with fewer resources a route into livestock enterprises, while Business Development Services provide guidance as they establish and develop their businesses.

Access to finance is another important part of inclusion. The project works to strengthen financial products that reflect the circumstances of young entrepreneurs, including those who lack the collateral traditionally required for credit. This creates opportunities for young people who may otherwise be excluded from financial services.

The project also considers the social norms that limit young people’s participation in economic activity and decision-making. Young women are specifically supported to take a stronger role in driving the livestock transformation agenda, while the wider approach seeks to make participation in livestock value chains more accessible to people who have traditionally faced exclusion.
