Our Africa Forward strategy is consolidated this month with the first meeting of the organisation’s new Africa Board in Nairobi.
The aim of Ripple Effect’s Africa Forward approach, a key part of our 2030 strategy, is to ensure that all our activities are driven and directed by our experienced staff in Africa.
In August 2021, we established our Africa Hub office in Nairobi, headed by Fred Ochieng as Africa Director, providing leadership and coordination of all our African operations.
The new Africa Board supporting Fred and his hub team will work alongside our UK-based Group Board (which has global oversight of Ripple Effect’s operations), and our other country-specific boards of trustees in Uganda, Kenya and the US.
Experience to strengthen influence
Africa Director Fred Ochieng says:
“Having a substantive board for the Africa office is hugely important, not only for governance and strategic oversight of our work. The wide experience of these trustees will strengthen our influence in the region and support our fundraising efforts – helping us to achieve our mission.” - Fred Ochieng, Africa Director
The Africa Board is chaired by Amal Murgian, who was born in Kenya and after education in the UK and US has made her career in management consulting and finance. She has had a longstanding involvement with philanthropic work in the US and Africa, particularly related to improving the lives of women and girls in east Africa.
The board began its work on the 4th of May 2023 with formal confirmation of its membership and completing its registration requirements.
And changes to the Group board…
Ripple Effect’s Group board in the UK also has some announcements. In March 2023 John Geake stepped down as Chairperson after serving with expertise and dedication for eight years. Under his leadership the organisation’s income grew by 30% thanks to his focus and involvement.
Newly appointed Group Chair Peter Jeffries brings to this role nearly 40 years’ experience in the animal health sector. He will lead the Group board of trustees in delivering the organisation’s 2030 strategy, focused on building the organisation’s impact and reach in order to support a further 5 million people in rural Africa to learn more, grow more and sell more.
