At Ripple Effect, our mission is clear: to transform lives in rural Africa and protect the planet through sustainable agriculture including climate action, gender and social inclusion, and business skills. Achieving this impact requires more than great programmes - it requires a robust, resilient approach to fundraising that allows us to reach more people, more effectively, and more sustainably.
This year, we have been refining our global roadmap for income generation, a strategy that will guide our work over the next decade. Our aim is to reach 5 million more people by 2030, while building a strong foundation that enables growth year on year.
A crossroads for change
The world is changing fast. Inflation, reduced government aid, and increasing competition for funding mean that securing resources is more challenging than ever. Yet these challenges are also an opportunity to rethink how we fund our work and to build a system that is resilient, innovative, and impactful.
As Winston Churchill once said, “To improve is to change”. For Ripple Effect, embracing change means evolving our fundraising approach so that every pound raised translates directly into lasting community transformation.
Four strategic shifts
Our global roadmap is built around four interconnected shifts designed to strengthen our income generation and deliver sustainable impact.
- Local ownership of fundraising: country teams are developing their own funding strategies, ensuring that fundraising directly supports local programme delivery. This empowers communities and aligns resources with the areas of greatest need.
- Strategic opportunities across countries: we are creating multi-country projects that address major challenges across our programmes. Initiatives such as the Thematic Funds (Farming for the Future, Equal Roots, and Seed & Scale) enable donors to support wide-reaching, systemic change.
- Strengthening core fundraising operations: the UK remains a critical source of unrestricted income, which allows us to invest in innovation and pilot new approaches. By stabilising donor engagement and expanding legacy giving, we can ensure sustainable funding for both programmes and organisational growth.
- Diversifying revenue streams through innovation: beyond traditional fundraising, we are exploring social enterprises and other innovative income models. This creates new revenue streams while simultaneously delivering impact in the communities we serve.
These shifts work together as a system, enabling Ripple Effect to grow sustainably, respond to challenges, and capitalise on opportunities in a rapidly changing world.
Why this matters: real stories, real change
At the heart of our income generation strategy is impact on people’s lives. Josina, a participant in the Sustainable Foods and Environment Project in Kakamega, Kenya, shared her story:
“Before I joined Ripple Effect, I used to wake up at 2:00 in the morning worrying about the day ahead. My children would come home from school hungry. Now, I sleep well, and my family is thriving. I am shining.”
Stories like Josina’s remind us why sustainable funding is essential. Every investment we receive helps communities like hers thrive, improving livelihoods and opportunities for the next generation.
Looking ahead
Our global roadmap is more than a strategy. It’s a commitment to working smarter, together, and sustainably. By empowering local teams, pursuing strategic multi-country initiatives, strengthening core fundraising, and embracing innovation, Ripple Effect is building a system of income that allows us to reach more people, more effectively.
Through this approach, we are not just responding to a changing world - we are shaping it, ensuring that our programmes can continue to deliver life-changing impact for years to come.
