Gift Aid confirmation FAQs
You may have received a communication from Ripple Effect about confirming your Gift Aid declaration. You can find answers to frequently asked questions below:
You have received this communication so we can ensure the details that you've provided us with previously are accurate for our Gift Aid claims, as required by HMRC regulations. Even if you've opted out of communication, we still need to confirm this information. For more details on how we handle your data, please refer to our privacy policy. We really appreciate your support.
Gift Aid is a government scheme for charity supporters who pay UK income and/or capital gains tax. For every pound you earn, you pay 25p in tax. By signing up to Gift Aid, every time you donate, we can reclaim the tax you’ve paid on that donation. So, if you donate £10, we can claim an extra £2.50. This means your donation is worth more – and at no extra cost to you. You can find out more here.
Your repair letter/email confirms that we’ve been able to claim Gift Aid on your donations in the past as per a previous instruction from yourself, as specified in the letter. And that you’d like us to claim Gift Aid on any donations from you in the future. We’ve sent you a letter to make sure we’ve got all your personal details right, and that you we can still claim Gift Aid on your behalf.
If your details are accurate in the letter, then we already have everything we need to claim Gift Aid on your donations. So, you don’t need to do anything. But please tell us if anything has changed, for example your address, or if you’ve stopped paying tax.
If you don’t pay tax, don’t pay enough tax to cover Gift Aid, or you've changed your mind, you can end your Gift Aid declaration. Just let us know by emailing our Supporter Care team at supporter@rippleeffect.org or phoning us on 01225 874222 (Mon-Thurs, 9am-5pm).
Under General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules, we are permitted to contact you about your Gift Aid declaration on an administrative basis.
Under HMRC rules we have a liability period of the current financial year plus the previous four years. This means that if you made any donations during this time period on which we claimed Gift Aid we need to ensure that we had a valid declaration covering those donations, otherwise we may be liable to repay the Gift Aid that we claimed.

Similar to many other charities we have a mixture of paper and digital records and have number of processes and controls to keep these safe. We have a secure offsite archiving system. There are thousands of records here and at present we are not able to easily index and match these back to each individual records which incurs a cost more than the Gift Aid we’d claim. Sending this letter allows us to confirm Gift Aid with our supporters but also ensure we fulfil HMRCs guidance and reduce any risk not doing so may cause. Following writing to you and then claiming the Gift Aid, these records will be destroyed in line with our data retention policy.
We take seriously the security of your data – you can read more about the ways we use and protect your data in our privacy policy.
Simply because we don’t need one – to save your convenience and cost of return postage but also because you have completed one in the past, we’ll save a copy of this letter on your records, and this will act as your declaration.
After 30 days from the letter date, we'll continue Gift Aid claims unless you instruct otherwise. You can you can end your Gift Aid declaration at any time – just let us know by emailing our Supporter Care team at supporter@rippleeffect.org or phoning us on 01225 874222 (Mon-Thurs, 9am-5pm).
You may not be aware that we had a rebrand from Send a Cow to Ripple Effect in May 2022. You may have given whilst we were still named Send a Cow. Your Gift Aid declaration is still valid under our new name.
Yes, your declaration remains valid. Our charity operations continue under our new name. The letter we sent you confirms that you are still eligible for Gift Aid unless you let us know otherwise.
It’s your responsibility to tell us if you can’t add Gift Aid to your donations anymore as per HMRC guidance. But we will still get in touch every now and then to make sure you’re still happy for us to claim Gift Aid, just in case you’ve forgotten to let us know.
