Wednesh lives in rural Ethiopia with two of her children and two grandchildren. After her husband passed away following an illness brought on by malnutrition, she became responsible for farming and providing for her family alone.
Her family relied on enset (false banana), maize and coffee. They had enough food for around three months of the year, but for the remaining nine months, they faced the daily worry of finding enough to eat.
Climate change made life even harder. Coffee production dropped, delayed rains ruined maize harvests, and flooding, soil erosion and landslides continued to damage the land she depended on.
Without a balanced nutritious diet, illness was common, and her children experienced malnutrition and delayed growth.
However, through Ripple Effect, Wednesh has learned how to restore her soil using organic compost and vermicompost, establish a productive kitchen garden and grow a wider variety of vegetables.

Today, Wednesh is not only growing enough food for her family, but also sharing seeds and practical farming knowledge with her neighbours, helping other families grow food too. She dreams of restoring her coffee plantation, educating her children and seeing all her land green and fully fertile.

FAQ: How the Big Give works
The Big Give Regular Giving campaign is the UK’s biggest match-funded campaign. For one month, Ripple Effect supporters can have their donations doubled and, in doing so, can make twice the difference to farming families across rural Africa.

To take part and have your donation doubled, you must donate to Ripple Effect's campaign page on the Big Give website between 9am Tuesday 1 September to 11pm Tuesday 29th September. Donations made via the Big Give website during the campaign period will then be doubled by The Big Give champion.
