Friday 8th March marks International Women’s Day. A day to celebrate the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women all around the world.
This International Women’s Day, we’re calling for a gender balanced world.
Women make up 43% of the world’s agricultural work force. But they have far less access to land and resources than men. This gender imbalance holds everyone back.
That’s why at Ripple Effect, we train families in gender equality, and 67% percent of the people we work with are women. Gender equality is at the heart of who we are, and what we do.
We believe that in order for families and communities to reach their potential and eliminate food insecurity, both men and women must play equitable, balanced roles in running the household and farming the land.
Our work places a special focus on women, helping them to recognise their potential, as well as identify the barriers and opportunities they face.
When men and women work together and have equal opportunities, everyone benefits. In fact, research shows that if given the same opportunities, women farmers could feed an extra 150 million people.
On this day, our UK and African staff have adopted pledges for how they personally and collectively will work towards a gender balanced world. Together at Ripple Effect we pledge to work towards a gender balanced world not just today, but all year round.
Here are some of the staff from across Ripple Effect making their pledges to #BalanceForBetter.
