How we create lasting change
At Ripple Effect, we believe that lasting change happens when people have the knowledge and opportunities to build better futures for themselves.
Across rural Africa, many farming families face interconnected challenges including poverty, food insecurity, climate change and inequality. Yet we know that when communities are empowered to lead their own development, they can transform their lives and create positive change that lasts for generations.
Our Theory of Change explains how we work alongside communities to make this happen. It sets out the pathway from the activities we support today to the long-term impact we want to see across Africa.
Our Theory of Change
Our Theory of Change describes how the support we provide helps communities strengthen livelihoods, improve food security, increase resilience to climate change and create opportunities for future generations.
At its heart is a simple belief: when farming families have the skills, confidence and resources they need, they can drive sustainable change within their households, communities and local economies.
How change happens
We support communities to:
Learn more
People develop knowledge, skills and confidence through training, practical learning and peer support. Together, communities explore sustainable agriculture, nutrition, climate-smart farming practices, gender equality and leadership.
Grow more
Families improve food production while caring for the environment. By adopting sustainable farming approaches and climate adaptation techniques, they are better able to withstand shocks and secure a reliable supply of nutritious food.
Sell more
Farmers strengthen their businesses, access markets and create new income opportunities. Increased earnings help families invest in their farms, educate their children and build more secure futures.
What we focus on
Everything we do contributes to four interconnected areas of change.
Climate adaptation and mitigation
Communities are equipped to adapt to a changing climate while restoring natural resources and protecting the environment for future generations.
Food and nutrition security
Families have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food throughout the year, improving health and wellbeing.
Financial security
Households build resilient livelihoods through stronger farm enterprises, increased income and greater economic opportunity.
Gender and social inclusion
Women, young people and marginalised groups are better able to participate in decision-making, access opportunities and shape their own futures.
Our organisational approach
We know that sustainable development cannot be achieved through short-term solutions. That's why we focus on approaches that create long-term, locally led change.
Community-led development
Communities identify priorities, drive decisions and lead the changes they want to see. Our role is to support, equip and facilitate rather than direct.
Building local capacity
We strengthen skills, leadership and community structures so that knowledge and benefits continue long after a project has ended.
Working through partnerships
We collaborate with community groups, local organisations, governments and other partners to increase impact and reach more people.
Creating a ripple effect
The most powerful change spreads beyond the communities we work with directly. As people share knowledge, inspire others and influence local systems, the benefits reach far more families.
Influencing wider change
Alongside our programmes, we seek to influence policy and practice, helping successful approaches reach more people and contribute to lasting systems change.
The impact we aim to see
Through this approach, we work towards a future where:
- People earn above the poverty line and are financially secure.
- Families have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food.
- Communities adapt effectively to climate change and restore the environment.
- Marginalised people have greater inclusion, voice and agency.
- Local economies become more vibrant and resilient.
Ultimately, we want rural communities across Africa to have the opportunity to thrive, today and for generations to come.
By 2030, we aim to reach 5 million more people across Africa.
We will achieve this through deep community engagement, strong partnerships, local leadership and approaches that can be scaled and replicated. Together, we can accelerate progress towards a more confident, thriving and sustainable rural Africa.
