Your community garden is twinned
Growing side by side to plant hope for the future
Welcome to Ripple Effect’s Garden Twinning community.
Whether this pack was chosen for your church, allotment, school or another shared growing space, thank you for being part of something truly special. Through Garden Twinning, you’re joining growers here in the UK and farming families in rural Africa who are adapting, learning and growing in the face of the climate crisis.
Together, we’re growing side by side to plant hope for the future.
What is Garden Twinning?
Garden Twinning is a special way to connect your community space with Ripple Effect’s work alongside farming families in rural Africa.
Each Garden Twinning pack is based on the average cost of supporting six farming families with a year of sustainable agriculture training through Ripple Effect’s projects in rural Africa.
Because donations go wherever the need is greatest, every Garden Twinning pack helps Ripple Effect respond flexibly to support farming families and communities as needs change.
A year of training in sustainable agriculture provides practical techniques that help families to:
🍅 Grow more food & improve soil health
💧 Harvest and save water
🌾 Build resilience to drought and flooding
🧺 Create small businesses and incomes
🌍Share knowledge across their communities
🌟 Build brighter futures for their children
A thank you from our staff and farmers we support:
Growing side by side
Gardeners everywhere face challenges - from dry weather and poor soil to protecting plants and growing healthy food sustainably.
Across the UK and rural Africa, growers are sharing a common goal: nurturing gardens that can support families, communities and the environment.
Community gardens here in the UK and farming communities in rural Africa are both shaped by:
- changing weather
- space or resources
- shared knowledge and working together
- and a passion for growing
Though our gardens may look different, we’re growing side by side.
In the UK
- Composting and soil care
- Planting for pollinators
- Saving water during dry spells
- Growing plants and food organically
- Using gardening for mental health
- Volunteers sharing skills and time
Across rural Africa
- Restoring soil fertility with compost
- Diversifying crops for resilience
- Harvesting rainwater to use for the dry season
- Making natural plant feeds
- Farmers training other community members
- Selling produce to earn income to feed their children
Families supported through Ripple Effect’s projects learn practical, sustainable gardening techniques that help crops thrive in difficult conditions. Why not try some of them in your community space?

Your Garden Twinning plaque is a wonderful way to start conversations about gardening, sustainability and global community. We hope your plaque becomes a talking point for visitors, volunteers and members - a reminder that gardens can connect communities across the world. Here's some conversation starters:
- For every family Ripple Effect works with directly, even more families benefit as farmers share their knowledge, seeds, tools and skills with neighbours. How can your garden bring people together?
- Many of the farming families Ripple Effect works alongside are adapting to longer droughts and more unpredictable rainfall caused by the climate crisis. Have you ever thought about how you'd garden if water was scarce for months at a time?
- Ripple Effect's approach starts with what a family already has — their skills, labour and even a small space to grow food — rather than relying on expensive inputs. What could UK gardeners learn from farmers growing food with limited water and resources?
- Farmers often become teachers themselves. Community members who receive extra training go on to share their knowledge with neighbours and local groups. What growing skills or experiences could your group share to inspire others?
