Bag Garden
This Bag Garden charity gift helps farmers in rural Africa grow enough to support themselves and their families in the face of climate crisis.
Bag gardens are a simple and sustainable way to grow vegetables in small spaces, whether in Africa or in your garden!
A hessian sack filled with a mixture of soil and compost around a central column of stones, bag gardens filter water to vegetables planted in the top and around the sides. With this technique it’s not long before families are growing a diverse range of colour vegetables to add vital nutrients to every meal.

- When you buy a gift from Ripple Effect, you’re making a donation to help families develop their own solutions so they can grow a better future including tools, livestock and training. Your gift is spent wherever the need is greatest across the countries we work in, making a huge difference to the lives of families living in some of the poorest regions of rural Africa.
“Before Ripple Effect, we didn’t know about techniques like bag gardens. We have different structures now like this and also a keyhole garden. It’s very beneficial in the dry season when we can’t access water as it uses little water. In the last dry season, we grew Swiss chard and we now don’t need to spend money to buy vegetables at the market. I’ll be making more like it.”
