Community groups

From Rotaries to the WI, we’ve been working with UK community groups & clubs for over 30 years - together bringing hope and transformation to poor communities in rural Africa.

Every day, families face poverty that is extreme, cruel, and worst of all – unnecessary. But rural Africa is rich with opportunity and where there is land, there is hope. Your Group can make a lasting difference by helping refugee families in Uganda grow a place to call home…

Christine Adwar 1

Meet Christine

Christine, 32, has fled her home in South Sudan to reach Uganda's Palabek Refugee Settlement. She has a small piece of land around her simple hut to grow food. She is ready to plant seeds so that her family can eat this Summer. But the dry land is standing in her way.

Ugandan Refugee Projects

In South Sudan, many families have no option but to flee their homes due to ongoing conflict. Uganda’s refugee policy is one of the world’s most progressive. In the Palabek Settlement, South Sudanese refugees live side by side with the local Ugandan community. When we start work with families like Christine’s, we start by providing the seeds, tools and training for families to create flourishing vegetable gardens. We next provide training so that families can build simple home improvements, such as energy-saving stoves, from local sustainable materials. Once families are settled and growing enough to eat, we then provide support with setting up small businesses, so that families can sell surplus vegetables at market and earn an income.

Ripple Effect have already successfully worked with 500 families in the Palabek Refugee Settlement with help from our community group supporters. The funds your Group raise will help us work with 769 families like Christine’s, in three further refugee settlements across Uganda. Your support could transform the lives of refugees like Christine, to help grow a place to call home.

In return for your support, we will send your Group inspiring updates on the progress of the families you are helping plus invites to special events so you can see the lasting difference you’re making.

How your Group can create lasting change

£104  could support four families as they make home improvements such as building an energy-saving stove from local materials, which directs smoke away from the cooking area, makes cooking safer, and uses less fuel to keep trees standing. A clean latrine, tip tap (a home-made handwasher) and drying rack will improve hygiene around the home and keep the whole family healthy.

£242 could train two farmers to become ‘Peer Farmers Trainers’. Some of our most successful farmers go on to become volunteers, training others in how to get the best from their farms. Your donation could help could ensure that Peer Farmers have all the training they need to help their neighbours grow nutritious vegetables and get the most from their land, all year round.

£570 could provide training for five families so they can start a successful business. Once families are eating well and earning enough to send their children to school, we encourage them to think bigger. Families will learn to add value to their produce to sell in the local community.
