Founder of Kenya Thriving visits our work in Migori, Kenya
Ken Hart is the founder of Kenya Thriving, an organisation which works with the Otacho Christian Children’s Home to support and care for orphaned children in Kakrao Ward, Migori County, Southwest Kenya.
Ken is a long-standing supporter of our work: he first introduced us to Migori back in 2016 and was instrumental to the setting up of our Kakrao Sustainable Livelihoods Project (KLP) which ended in August 2020. His support continued with helping to raise funds for the Enterprising Migori Project – phase II of KLP.
Ken visited our project office in Migori, Kenya in mid-September and got to hear about the project’s success from Beatrice Were, coordinator of our Migori programmes and Rose Mwita, a project staff. Afterwards, they took him on a tour of one the farms involved.
Growing more, selling more
They visited Florence Awuor, a resident of Osogo village in West Kanyamkago Ward, Migori. Florence works on her farm with her son Moses Onyango, who is himself a peer farmer trainer on the project. The mother and son along with four other members of their household have been receiving training on sustainable farming since the project started in early 2021.
Florence took the group around her farm showing off the technologies they are using to produce food, much to Ken’s amazement. She told him she now has enough food for her family and earns at least 300 KSh (£2.30) from selling her vegetables daily. Extra income, she says, comes from selling the bananas she also grows.
That day alone, she told Ken, she had earned 1000 KSh (about £8) from selling two bunches of bananas. This money, she said, will come in handy for her younger son’s school fees and go towards the building of her permanent house.
“I am deeply impressed with the stories Beatrice shared with me. It is incredibly encouraging to see the massive impact this project has had on so many hundreds of lives. The stories were brought alive with the visit to Florence’s farm, which showed the project’s impact in a profound way.” - Ken Hart, Founder of Kenya Thriving
Future ripples?
Ken Hart reflected on possible ways in which the Otacho Orphanage could receive help from Ripple Effect’s expertise, and begin vegetable and poultry farming, so the orphanage becomes self-sustaining.
