Sofanit Mesfin
Meet Sofanit Mesfin, Ripple Effect's Gender and Social Inclusion Coordinator, based in Addis Ababa.
After I graduated, I set up an NGO with like-minded colleagues supporting sex workers in Addis who are affected by HIV/AIDS. We trained them in new skills so they had the option of supporting themselves in other ways. I then worked with a local organisation providing access to clean water access for women in rural communities in Ethiopia: this was the eye-opener that led me to the work I’m doing now.
Poverty doesn’t strike equally
Growing up in Addis Ababa, I was unaware of the exclusion and unequal treatment experienced by many women and people with disabilities in the remote rural areas of my own country, and across the region.
Since I joined Ripple Effect and developed deeper engagement with these diverse groups, I’ve seen the many ways that they are disproportionately affected by poverty and disadvantage.
Addressing people’s unique needs, priorities and potential is central to the work we do. This is why we develop practical, tailored solutions that help them overcome the barriers in their lives.
