Although Zambia has a reputation for political stability, social conditions are tough.

The prevalence of HIV is high at 12.4%. Gender inequality is severe, and women are often excluded from decision-making at home and in the wider community. Many have been widowed by HIV/Aids, or have taken in orphaned children.

In the Eastern Province of Zambia, where Ripple Effect currently works, livestock are vital to the livelihoods of the vast majority of people – yet they tend to be poorly managed and low-yielding animals, leading to widespread food insecurity and poverty.

Ripple Effect Zambia is our smallest country programme and over the next few years we hope to build on our experience, increase our visibility, grow new projects and work with more vulnerable households.
