Enterprise
Our aim is not just that rural families should be free from hunger: we believe they should have the widest opportunities to develop micro-businesses and build their financial security.
As soon a farmer is producing enough food to meet their own needs we encourage them to get their surplus produce to market. But if they are producing edible soyabeans, when the local market demand is for soyabeans for oil, they won’t be getting the best return for their hard work.
We train farmers in understanding market systems, encourage micro-entrepreneurs to develop their adventurous business ideas, and particularly focus on expanding employment opportunities for young people.
Opening up wider markets
We challenge conventional market systems which are often closed to newcomers, encourage the power of collectives, and help farmers develop value-added products.
Ensuring access to affordable finance
Every opportunity and good idea needs accessible, affordable finance to make it a reality. We support informal village banking schemes and access to finance services for growing businesses.
Developing youth skills
Growing youth unemployment means a generation may miss out on work opportunities. We’re training them in the skills they need, encouraging them to make their own work, and supporting the enterprises which can provide future employment.
